Can I Use Chemical Drain Cleaner on Old Pipes?
Why caustic drain cleaner and old Bayside pipes are a bad combination, what the chemicals actually do, and what to use instead.

The short answer
No. If your home has old pipework, and most homes in Brighton, Elwood and the surrounding suburbs do, chemical drain cleaner is the wrong tool. At best it dissolves a small hole through the blockage and leaves the rest in place. At worst it damages the pipes, injures whoever works on the drain next, and turns a simple clearing job into a repair.
This is one of the questions we get asked most, usually by someone standing in a hardware aisle. The honest answer takes a little longer than the label on the bottle, so here it is.
What is actually in the bottle
Most supermarket drain cleaners are caustic, built around sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) or similar strong alkalis. They work by chemically converting fats and dissolving hair and organic matter, and the reaction generates significant heat inside the pipe. Some products are oxidisers, using bleach chemistry to break material down. The strongest products, usually trade-only, are acid based and more aggressive again.
Two properties matter for what follows. First, the reaction is exothermic: a slug of caustic sitting against a blockage can heat the pipe wall considerably. Second, the chemical does not vanish when it fails. If it does not clear the blockage, it sits in the pipe as a pool of concentrated caustic, waiting.
Why old pipes cope so badly
Modern PVC in good condition tolerates household drain cleaner reasonably well. The pipes under older Bayside homes are a different story.
Earthenware sewer pipes, standard under Edwardian homes and Californian bungalows, are glazed clay laid in short lengths with mortared joints. The clay itself resists chemicals, but the joints do not. A century of ground movement has already opened many of them, and tree roots find their way in through exactly those gaps. Caustic pooling at a joint attacks the mortar and accelerates the failure, and where roots are the real blockage, the chemical barely touches them. Roots are living wood; the cleaner burns the surface fibres and the mass keeps growing.
Old galvanised steel and cast iron wastes, common in pre-1970s kitchens and bathrooms, are usually already corroding from the inside. Caustic chemistry and the heat of the reaction accelerate attack on the exposed metal, and a pipe wall that was quietly rusting can start weeping after repeated chemical treatment.
Even older PVC is not safe. Early PVC becomes brittle with age, and the heat generated by a caustic reaction sitting in one spot can soften or distort a pipe that has decades of UV exposure or poor bedding behind it. Rubber joint seals swell and degrade with repeated chemical contact too.
The problem you cannot see: what it does to the next step
Here is the part the bottle never mentions. Chemical cleaners fail on most serious blockages, because most serious blockages in this area are roots, collapsed pipe sections or compacted debris that chemistry cannot dissolve. When the chemical fails, the drain is now full of caustic solution, and somebody still has to clear it properly.
That somebody is a plumber putting hands, a camera and machinery into your drain. Working on a drain loaded with caustic risks chemical burns and equipment damage, so please tell your plumber if anything has gone down the drain before we arrive. It changes how we approach the job, and it sometimes means the drain must be flushed before real work can start. You will not save time by not mentioning it; you will just make the visit longer.
Repeated chemical use also disguises the real fault. Each dose burns a channel through the soft part of the blockage and the drain limps along for another month, while the root mass or the failing joint underneath gets steadily worse. By the time the drain blocks completely, a problem that could have been jetted clear has sometimes become an excavation.
What to do instead
For a slow or blocked drain in an older home, work through this sequence.
- Start mechanical, not chemical. A plunger clears a surprising share of fixture blockages. Make sure there is enough water to cover the cup, block the overflow with a wet cloth, and use firm, rhythmic strokes.
- Clean the trap. For a sink or basin, the U-bend unscrews by hand or with gentle wrench pressure over a bucket. Hair and gunk in the trap is the most common cause, and cleaning it is legitimate DIY.
- For grease-prone kitchen drains, hot (not boiling) water with a squirt of dishwashing liquid, flushed through regularly, does more good than any caustic product and harms nothing.
- Enzyme-based drain treatments are the one bottled product we do not object to for maintenance. They digest organic build-up slowly and will not touch roots or fix a real fault, but they will not damage pipes either.
- If the drain blocks repeatedly, gurgles, or more than one fixture is slow, stop treating symptoms. That pattern means a line problem, usually roots in the sewer around here, and it needs a CCTV camera to find and high-pressure jetting to clear. You see the footage before anything is quoted.
The rule of thumb
If a blockage clears with a plunger, a trap clean or hot soapy water, it was never a chemical job. If it does not, it will not clear with chemicals either, and the bottle only adds risk. Old pipes have earned gentler handling, and the real fix for a recurring blockage is finding the cause, not burning a temporary hole through the symptom.
Common questions
I already poured drain cleaner down and it did not work. What now?
Do not add a second product, and never mix different cleaners, because some combinations react dangerously. Flush with plenty of cold water if the drain is moving at all, keep the area ventilated, and tell the plumber exactly what went down and when. It matters for their safety and changes how the job is approached.
Is bicarb and vinegar safe for old pipes?
Yes. The fizzing reaction is mild and mostly produces carbon dioxide and water, so it will not harm earthenware, metal or PVC. It is genuinely useful for freshening a smelly waste and shifting light build-up, but be realistic: it will not clear a real blockage, and it does nothing at all against tree roots.
Will drain cleaner dissolve tree roots?
Household caustic cleaners barely affect live roots. Dedicated root-killing foams exist, but in the old earthenware lines common around Brighton the roots are entering through failed joints, so the pipe itself needs assessment. Cutting or jetting the roots out and then deciding between ongoing maintenance and relining is the honest path.
