Common questions
Should I repair my hot water unit or replace it?
A useful rule of thumb: if the tank itself is leaking, replace it, because a corroded tank cannot be repaired. If the fault is a part like a valve, element, thermostat or thermocouple and the unit is under about eight to ten years old, a repair is often worthwhile. We give you a fixed price for both options where both are realistic, and we will tell you plainly if putting money into an old unit is a bad idea.
How long does a hot water system last?
A storage tank typically lasts eight to twelve years, and continuous flow gas units often longer with servicing. Close to the beach, salt air shortens the life of external units, so the lower end of those ranges is more realistic in Bayside unless the anode has been maintained.
Gas, electric or heat pump: what should I replace it with?
It depends on what connections your home already has, where the unit sits, how many people are showering, and how long you plan to stay in the house. Heat pumps cost less to run and there are government incentives, but they need the right location and are usually ordered in. A like-for-like swap is fastest when you need hot water back today. We lay out the realistic options for your house rather than pushing one answer.
Can you replace my hot water unit the same day?

Why is water dripping from the valve on the side of my unit?
The temperature and pressure relief valve is designed to let a small amount of water out while the tank heats, so a minor occasional drip can be normal. A constant stream, or a drip that never stops, means the valve or the pressure needs attention. It is a small part and an easy check, and ignoring it puts strain on the tank, so it is worth a look rather than a bucket.
Do I get a compliance certificate for the installation?
Yes. Hot water installation is licensed plumbing work in Victoria, and where the work meets the threshold we lodge a compliance certificate and give you your copy. It matters for insurance and when you sell, so keep it with the house paperwork.
