Get the water off
If you have not already done it, we walk you through shutting off the main at the meter over the phone. That one step limits the damage more than anything we do afterwards.
Locate the failure
We trace the leak using pressure testing, acoustic listening equipment and a moisture meter, and we isolate sections of pipework to narrow it down. The goal is to open one small section of wall or floor, not three.
Show you the problem and quote the fix
Once we know where the pipe has failed and why, we show you, explain the options and give you a fixed price before any repair work starts.
Repair or replace the section
We cut out the failed section and replace it with new copper or PEX, matched properly to the existing pipework. If the pipe around the failure is in poor condition, we tell you honestly whether a longer replacement makes more sense than a patch.
Pressure-test and tidy up
We pressure-test the repaired line before restoring the water, check every nearby joint, and leave the work area clean. Where wall or floor access was needed, we cut neatly so your plasterer or tiler has a straightforward patch. Reinstating plaster or tiles is a separate trade, so that part is usually a second visit by them, not us.

Many homes in Brighton and Gardenvale still run on their original water mains. Galvanised steel pipes from the pre-war years corrode from the inside out, so a pipe can look fine on the outside and be paper-thin at a thread or joint. Original copper lasts longer but work-hardens over decades of pressure changes, and we regularly find pinhole leaks in copper that was laid when the house was built.
The ground plays a part too. What should I do right now if a pipe has burst?
Turn the water off at the meter, usually near the front boundary of the property. Turn off electricity to any area where water is near wiring or fittings, open the lowest tap in the house to drain the pipes, and move what you can out of the way. Then call us. How do you find a leak that is hidden inside a wall or under a floor?
We use a process of elimination rather than guesswork. Pressure testing tells us which section of pipework is losing water, acoustic equipment lets us listen for the leak through walls and slabs, and a moisture meter maps how far the water has travelled. We only open up the wall or floor once we are confident about the location.
Will you have to cut into my walls?
Often yes, but we keep it as small as we can. Locating the leak accurately first means one neat access hole rather than exploratory demolition. We cut cleanly so the patch is simple for a plasterer, and we tell you before we cut anything.
Do you give a price before you start the repair?
Yes. Finding the leak and repairing it are two stages, and we explain how each is priced before we begin. Once we have located the failure, you get a fixed quote for the repair before any work starts, and if we find the surrounding pipe is in worse condition than expected we come back to you before doing anything extra.
Should I repair the burst section or replace the whole pipe run?
It depends on what the pipe around the failure looks like. If a copper line has one pinhole and the rest tests sound, a repair is the sensible fix. If a galvanised main is corroded along its length, patching one spot usually means we are back for the next failure within a year or two, and we will tell you that plainly so you can decide.
Does insurance cover a burst pipe?
Most home policies cover the water damage a burst pipe causes, though cover for the pipe repair itself varies between insurers. We cannot advise on your policy, but we can document the failure with photos and a written description, which insurers usually ask for. Check the details with your insurer directly.
