When "General Plumbing" Is the Right Booking
That dripping tap, slow drain and wobbly toilet do not need three callouts. How to bundle small jobs into one visit and get better value from your plumber.

The list every house has
Almost every home we visit in Brighton and the surrounding suburbs has one: the quiet list of small plumbing jobs that never quite justify a callout on their own. The ensuite tap that drips overnight. The laundry trough that drains slowly. The toilet that needs the button held down. The garden tap that sprays sideways. None of them are emergencies, so they wait, sometimes for years.
The problem is that small faults are rarely stable. A dripping tap wears a groove in its seat and becomes a running tap. A slow drain becomes a blocked one, usually on a long weekend. And each job, booked separately, carries its own visit. There is a better way to buy plumbing, and it is what a general plumbing booking is for.
Why one visit beats four
The economics of a plumbing callout are mostly about time and travel. Whether we come to fix one tap or five small jobs, the drive to your street, the setup, and the paperwork are much the same. Once the van is parked outside your place in Hampton or Brighton East, each additional small job costs far less to do than it would as its own booking.
Because we quote a fixed price before any work starts, bundling works in your favour in a very visible way. You tell us the whole list, we look at everything in one walkthrough, and you get one quote covering the lot. You can then decide which items to go ahead with. Most people are surprised at how much of the list disappears in a single afternoon.
There is a quality benefit too. Seeing the whole house at once tells us things that isolated jobs do not. Three fixtures with poor flow might share one failing pipe. Two slow drains might point to the same sagging section of sewer. Piecemeal repairs can treat symptoms for years while the cause goes unfound.
What fits in a general plumbing booking
A general booking suits any job that is real but not urgent, and especially collections of them. From the work we do around Bayside, the usual suspects include:
- Dripping or stiff taps, inside and out, including washer and spindle service
- Running or slow-filling toilets and worn flush buttons
- Slow drains in basins, showers and laundry troughs
- Noisy pipes, including banging or shuddering when taps close
- Low or uneven water pressure at particular fixtures
- Replacing old flexible hoses under sinks and vanities before they fail
- Leaking or seized isolation valves under sinks and behind toilets
- Dishwasher and washing machine connections
- Small visible leaks at fittings, wastes and trap connections
- A general once-over if you have just bought an older home
The pre-visit walk-through: five minutes that saves you money
Before you book, walk through the house with your phone and make the list. Turn every tap on and off. Flush every toilet and watch the cistern refill. Look under every sink with a torch, checking for corrosion on the flexible hoses and dampness on the cabinet floor. Run each drain for a minute and see how it clears. Check the garden taps and the hot water unit for weeps and rust stains.
Photos help us more than descriptions. A picture of the tap, the underside of the sink, or the corroded valve tells us what parts and tools to have on the van, which raises the odds that everything on your list is finished in one visit rather than waiting on a part. When you request a quote through our site you can attach photos directly.
Old houses reward this approach most
The homes that benefit most from a consolidated visit are the older ones, and around Brighton, Elwood and Sandringham that is much of the housing stock. Period homes accumulate small plumbing quirks the way they accumulate layers of paint: imperial-sized fittings that modern washers do not quite match, original stop taps that have seized in place, and pipework that three generations of owners have added to.
In these houses, a plumber who is already on site and already familiar with the era of the fittings can work through a list efficiently, and can tell you which quirks are harmless character and which are quiet warnings. A seized main stop tap, for instance, costs you nothing day to day, right up until the night you need to shut the water off in a hurry. It is exactly the kind of thing a general visit catches.
One honest note on doing it yourself. Changing a tap washer on your own tap is one of the few plumbing tasks a Victorian householder may legally do. Most other plumbing work, including anything involving pipework, drainage or gas, must be carried out by a licensed plumber. If you enjoy the small stuff, do the washers, and leave the rest of the list to us with a clear conscience.
How to book it
Send us the list through the quote form, with photos if you have them, and tell us it is a bundle of small jobs rather than one urgent fault. We will book a window that suits you, confirm the day before, and quote the full list on arrival before any work starts. If something on the list turns out to be bigger than it looked, we will tell you plainly and you decide how to handle it.
A house where everything drips, drains and flushes as it should is a quietly satisfying thing. It usually takes one visit to get there.
Common questions
Is there a minimum number of jobs for a general plumbing visit?
No. One genuine job is enough to book. But if you have one job, it is worth doing the five-minute walkthrough first, because in our experience most homes turn up two or three more once someone actually looks, and adding them to the same visit is the lowest-cost way to fix them.
Will you quote each job separately or one price for the lot?
We itemise the quote so you can see each job and decide what goes ahead. You are never committed to the whole list. The quote is fixed before work starts, so the price you approve is the price you pay.
What if you find a bigger problem during the visit?
We tell you what we found, show you where we can, and give you a separate quote for it. Nothing beyond the approved list happens without your say-so. Sometimes the finding is reassuring, like confirming an odd noise is harmless, and we will tell you that too.
